The Consulate General of Canada in New York and the Permanent Mission of Canada to the United Nations were among the organizers of the day-long United Nations Social Media Day (#socialUN) that featured social media professionals, digital diplomacy practitioner and academics sharing their experiences and “best practices.”

Representatives from Twitter, LinkedIn and Tumblr shared what they see as leading trends in social media today, moderated  by Lexie Riegelhaupt (@LexieGRieg) Director of Marketing and Communications at Mashable:

Florencia Iriondo (@Flolriondo) Editor at LinkedIn:

1)   Video is a key trend:

“With people able to shoot video more easily, people are more comfortable sharing video.. and we’re seeing people upload a lot of video they’re embedding into Slideshare presentations they then  post on LinkedIn.”

2)   More openness and less fear of sharing:

“Slowly people are becoming less afraid of sharing a message… previously, employers would train one person for sharing, but now everyone has a voice. Bit-by-bit employers realize that we all have a voice, and that can only help a company.”

Liba Rubenstein (@libawr) Director of Social Impact and Public Policy, Tumblr

1)   Quality of content

“Particularly in view of the merging of platforms.. It’s all about substance… the importance of investing in the best content in all its forms can’t be underestimated.”

2)   Concerns about privacy

.. is leading a trend of people using more anonymous platforms: “We’re seeing a move towards people wanting a more private persona online.”

Sean Evins (@evins) Twitter Partnerships Manager, Government & Elections Team

1)   We’re not going back from mobile devices.

“We’re not going back from mobile devices. It’s about using platforms like Twitter to reach your audience where they are and giving them information the way they want to receive it — in real time.”

2)   Live Tweeting of events:

“We’re seeing more people Tweet live events, whether the Superbowl.. or this event or events that rise organically, like what happened in Fergusen.. and with more people using video”
